Wave Energy Project: Bermuda
Last summer, the Lehigh team is partnered with the Bermuda Institute of Oceanic Studies (BIOS), a non-profit marine science and education institute whose mission statement is to “transform the fields of oceanography, marine science, and ocean health through a blend of cutting edge research, comprehensive educational experiences and a commitment to share our knowledge internationally.”
BIOS has been around since 1903 serving the northeast Atlantic with useful data about the ocean level, temperature, acidification and looking into how the changes in the ocean levels are effecting the organisms. A current project at BIOS that may affect human health is a potential cure for cancer. Sea urchins are the longest living species on the planet. Their average lifespan is around 200 years. Researchers are using sea urchins as model organisms to identify pathways involved in cellular resistance to cancer (which can then help target the development of anti-cancer treatments in humans), as well as mechanisms that maintain a youthful state in sea urchins.
Our BIOS partnership centers around a CyberSEES National Science Foundation grant that is focused on seeing the potential of wave energy come to fruition through technological advancements and innovation. The education component of this grant is what we have chosen to develop in Bermuda through a weeklong Lehigh-led scholar program.
